“Take time to appreciate employees and they will reciprocate in a thousand ways.”
– Bob Nelson

Ah, the famous gate keepers – the eyes and ears and the guards to the office you need to reach for a big business deal.

Remember the last time you tried to reach a business contact only to find they’d out-tasked their emails and calls to their assistant? Even their personal email account and sometimes even their cell phone messages may have been handed off to their right hand man/woman.

You’re left wondering if your message will be deemed as urgent as you do, or if it will even be delivered at all.

While many will lose their temper on the hired help, this is a chance for you to make an impression, and set yourself apart from the noise they’ve been hired to filter through.

Yes, beware of and be kind to the gatekeepers. Here’s how:

– Take the time call and to greet them on the phone. Find out how their day is going, or how they spent the weekend.
– Be sure to acknowledge, sympathize with, and compliment their ability to say no to everything and everyone.
– Remain persistent but not annoying – once you’ve crossed that line there’s no going back.

Save the date! Administrative Professional’s Day always falls on the Wednesday of the last full week of April. This year APD will be held on April 24, 2013.

This is your time to shine, and wooing these dreaded gate keepers could be as easy as an ecard, a gift certificate to lunch, or for a big business deal, even small bouquet. (Though if you go this route please do a bit of research on flowers and their meaning so your gate keeper doesn’t feel you’re making a move on them. And if you are going that route… well you’re on your own here).

Wishing you the best of luck in breaking down the doors at the company of your choosing for your ultimate success. Oh and when I served as an assistant, there wasn’t a box of chocolates I didn’t like. Good luck!
